This concludes a very exciting and successful CWS for the Morgan Hill Athletics. They were the first team from Morgan Hill to reach a Pony baseball World Series at any division for Morgan Hill. They played very well in the division games to win the Red division and advance to the championship round. Tampa area teams have won the CWS the last three years and this win puts them in position to make it four in a row. Morgan Hill wins Red Division and advances to Championship Round August 7, 2006 - O'Fallon, MI defeated Morgan Hill, CA 6-5 but ended up being eliminated from the championship round due to the runs allowed tie breaker. West was hit by a pitch to load the bases again. Jesse Carter grounded to Jon Hughes at third who attempted to turn the inning ending double play. Unfortunately the throw was ruled to have pulled Matt Cummins off second while Carter was out at first on the relay by Matt Cummins to Ryan Evanger. Wilke scored on the play to make the score 4-0. Morgan Hill manager Dave Newton argued briefly about the call at second to no avail. Grove struck out Mike Fowler to get out of the inning without any further damage. O'Fallon played excellent defense in the game to match the excellent pitching by Bell. They turned three double plays in the game and Tony Schulte made a diving catch to take a hit away from Blake Winzeler. Morgan Hill also played well defensively turning a double play in the sixth inning and Winzeler made a diving catch in right field on a fly ball by Larkin. Newton played the inning cautiously making sure that his team would either win the game outright or not tie the score. If the game went into extra innings O'Fallon would still have a slight chance of eliminating Morgan Hill from the championship round due to the runs allowed tie breaker or prevent Morgan Hill from winning the Red division. Danny Nelson leadoff the inning with a single but O'Fallon turned a double play on Hill's ground ball up the middle. Cummins singled and Hughes doubled to put runners on second and third with Cummins being held at third base. Evanger singled to drive in Cummins making it 6-5. Hughes was held at third to prevent the tie. A wild pitch moved Evanger to second but Hughes was held at third once again to prevent the tie. Grove walked to load the bases. McClung then grounded out to end the inning. The Red division ended in a three way tie with Morgan Hill, Lafayette and O'Fallon all finishing at 3-1. Each of the teams defeated one of the other two teams so the head-head tie breaker did not apply. The runs allowed by each team is the next tie breaker. Morgan Hill allowed 11 runs, Lafayette allowed 14 runs, and O'Fallon allowed 16 runs. Thus Morgan Hill won the Red division and Lafayette was the runner-up. O'Fallon won the game but was eliminated from the championship round due to the runs allowed tie breaker. If Tampa had lost the game they would have been eliminated from the medal round of the tournament. Greensboro has already clinched the White division top spot and Levittown would have clinched the runner-up spot they had won based on the head-head tie-breaker with Tampa. Both teams pitched extremely well. Eric Doty of Tampa pitched a complete game and held Levittown scoreless until the seventh inning. Harry Hernandez pitched 5 1/3 innings for Levittown and held Tampa to only two runs. Levittown had scoring opportunities in the first two innings but could not come up with the timely hit to drive in a run. Tempers flared in the top of the fourth inning when Roberto Perez walked for Levittown and then Emmanuel Quiles hit a fly ball to the shortstop who dropped the ball and then doubled up Perez at second and Quiles at first. Quiles did not run to first incorrectly thinking that an infield fly situation existed. Levittown argued this with the umpires to no avail. This escalated in the next few innings to finger pointing and some tense interactions between the two teams over another close out call in the top of the sixth. Tampa threatened in the top of the sixth when Hernandez walked Doty and Fest with one out and was relived by Gilbert Velez. Heiser bunted the runners over to second and third.
